Grapes & Gourmet Guys drew 250 people to Roses Run Country Club Tuesday evening to sample wine and food prepared by local male amateur chefs. Jean Geopfert and Mary Kay Whalen co-chaired the fundraiser for the GriefCare Place, and Dr. Terry Gordon was honorary chairman.As guests looked over silent auction items, the Get Back Band played music for dancing and David Renninger sold raffle tickets for a wall of wine, won by Virginia Deighton. Looking over the auction items were John and Janet Long, Toby Gorant, her son, Nick, and Sue Hobson.Judge Tom Teodosio enlisted the help of fellow Judge J. Paul Gallagher to serve his eggplant parmesan to Chuck and Mary Beth Abraham. Dr. Phil Martucci said all the vegetables in his pasta ala ortaggi verdura tritale were grown in his garden. Guests voted for their favorites by putting money in tip jars, while contest judges Eileen Burg, Joyce Lagios, Gail Moseley, Doris Stewart and Judges Lisa Coates and Linda Teodosio sampled each dish.The youngest chef, 3-year old Gavin Scott Davis, looked jaunty in his striped chef’s hat. He enlisted the aid of his mother, Annie Davis, and Kristie Warner to prepare his Zippy Slow Cooked Chili. Gavin said he enjoys chili while watching football with his dad, Aaron.Nancy and Bernie Rice, their son Norman and his wife Jill Sweitzer enjoyed dinner on the patio, along with Bill and Karen Monbeck, David and Sue Umbaugh, Scott Buck, Sheilla Perdak, Sharon and Glenn Goodson, Elizabeth Fontaine and Joe Soucek.Dorothy Jackson recommended Ron Alexander’s basil pesto; Father Norm Douglas said his Heavenly Bars were “a heavenly treat” while nearby Scott Stricklin added whipped cream to his lemon blueberry tarts. Bill Butto offered deep dish Sicilian lasagna, and Greg Hullinger served chilled cucumber soup with shrimp. Nick Betro won the People’s Choice Award for his CIA Pasta.Tom Stephan introduced Lou-Ann Redmon, founder and executive director, who thanked everyone for supporting GriefCare Place; and Lisa Scott, who gave a moving talk about the support she has received there. Gordon gave his insight into life’s challenges; his book, No Storm Lasts Forever, will be published this fall.
